I thought you weren't using authdaemon. You said you configured with --without-authdaemon. I'm at the edge of my knowledge at this point. I've never attempted to get /etc/shadow or /etc/passwd authentication working. I use vpopmail. The only thing left that I can think of would be a permissions problem. I don't know what permissions sqwebmail needs to check /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow files, but perhaps you should ask the list.
