I did and also added (the undocumented options) --with-authshadow and --with-authpwd.
However, I wasn't sure if I still needed to run authdaemond or not.  Tried both 
(running it and not) - didn't work.

I do appreciate all you help.

I just got it working with this configure parameters combination:

        ./configure --prefix=/var/sqwebmail 
--enable-cgibindir=/srv/www/sqwebmail/cgi-bin 
--enable-imagedir=/srv/www/sqwebmail/images 
--enable-imageurl=/srv/www/sqwebmail/images --with-authshadow --with-authpwd 

and with running authdaemond...

Now to enable https....
