When the binary sqwebmail is invoked to send a piece of mail it calls a
shell script called sendit.sh which then may do any number of things but
finally calls the MTA that actually sends the email.

    Webbrowser >> sqwebmail (as a post) >> sendit.sh >> MTA

The question I have is:

Is my understanding of what is happening correct?

Correct.

If it is correct, is there a repository of example sendit.sh scripts?

No, for the simple reason that for 99.99% of cases, the default sendit.sh script will work just fine.
