Howdy list,

Brief environment description:

FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE
Apache 1.3.28
sqwebmail-3.5.3.20030629

Have any of you seen anything like this before?

I upgraded my Apache server to 1.3.28 from 1.3.27 this last
Friday, and ever since then I've been getting tons of zombie
sqwebmail processes. I had 36 zombies when I came into work
this morning, and since shutting down the apache server
(which seems to effectively kill the zombies) I have 6 more...

Here's a 'pstree' output snippet to show you what I mean:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|-+- 98701 root /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| |-+- 00394 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| | \--- 98933 vpopmail (sqwebmail)
| |--- 98717 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| |--- 98718 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| |--- 98719 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| |--- 98720 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| |-+- 98721 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| | \--- 03992 vpopmail (sqwebmail)
| |-+- 98753 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| | \--- 05857 vpopmail (sqwebmail)
| |-+- 98767 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| | |--- 01919 vpopmail (sqwebmail)
| | \--- 43609 vpopmail (sqwebmail)
| |--- 98768 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| \-+- 99043 www /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
| \--- 30049 vpopmail (sqwebmail)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's my 'top' header:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
last pid: 18071; load averages: 3.00, 7.36, 5.57
                                             up 55+00:41:47 12:58:05
111 processes: 3 running, 102 sleeping, 6 zombie
CPU states: 73.1% user, 0.0% nice, 18.5% system, 1.5% interrupt, 6.9% idle
Mem: 80M Active, 622M Inact, 168M Wired, 28M Cache, 112M Buf, 106M Free
Swap: 2048M Total, 5000K Used, 2043M Free
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note the 6 zombies. And here's what happens when I try to kill one
of them:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[12::[/usr/local/vpopmail/domains/wingnet.net]# kill 01919
1919: No such process
[12::[/usr/local/vpopmail/domains/wingnet.net]#
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here's my Apache info:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Server Version: Apache/1.3.28 (Unix) PHP/4.3.3 mod_perl/1.28 mod_ssl/2.8.15
OpenSSL/0.9.7b
Server Built: Sep 19 2003 17:39:24
API Version: 19990320:15
Run Mode: standalone
User/Group: www(80)/80
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And again, killing the apache server effectively kills the zombies.

Here's another ps output so you can see the memory and CPU percentages and
such:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TT STAT STARTED TIME COMMAND PPID

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any ideas? This is very strange...
