Unless the shared folder index file is built, no shared folders will be visible.

And what exactly is the problem with showing the ACL icon next
to each folder?
i have (at the moment) no use for it and i don't have the time to
tell every user that this is a feature that he doesn't need :-)

You must have a reason to believe why not a single user would find it useful to share folders with some other user.

In any case, you can always replace the icon image with an invisiple pixel.
