Unless the shared folder index file is built, no shared folders will be visible.

And what exactly is the problem with showing the ACL icon next to each folder?i have (at the moment) no use for it and i don't have the time to tell every user that this is a feature that he doesn't need :-)
You must have a reason to believe why not a single user would find it useful to share folders with some other user.
In any case, you can always replace the icon image with an invisiple pixel.
