Congrats on acquiring a KGV!! I assembled an Aster KGV around 1991- I think that was when the kit was first produced, it has been an excellent steamer and still is, one repair was necessary over the years. One of the best performing Asters I am fortunate enough to enjoy. There are many things that could be wrong with it, the wicks, the alcohol feed, and the blast nozzle. The loco may raise steam quickly with a fan and blower but the true test is keeping pressure up with the blast nozzle while the engine is running, Have you steamed with the coaches while opening the blower valve slightly - this may keep the pressure up. I have observed a KGV where the blower had to be slightly open to maintain pressure. Being a simple four cylinder engine it is normal for the regulator to open further for steam to be admitted to all four cylinders. If the regulator is spongy then the 0 ring needs to be checked - a little steam oil on the 0 ring and shaft will help. I have not experienced any excessive steam consumption but how about the super heater- is that OK--if you cannot find a leak in that, one way to check is to run the loco on air, open the smoke box door, block the blast nozzle and open the regulator and listen to hear if there is any air coming from the area of the super heater, you can also use soapy water around the heater connections and look for lots of bubbles because the leak would have to be pretty serious.
