Walt, and all. It sounds like had lots of fun splitting the fog with your Mike. My Friends Accucraft K-28 Arrived on the 19th so I set off to Switzerland (about 2.5 hours drive)to have a look at her. A very impressive looking beast she is. Some minor damage had occurred on the way from China via America, but nothing a 75 watt soldering iron could not fix. One thing we have noticed is that the whistle is on the wrong side of the steam dome. Should be left, is right?. This engine is also finished in mat black, which came as a surprise. The engine will be run in gently on air and then on 4th Jan. is the big day, she will run on steam. This will relegate the C-16 and K-27 from Shavano Express duties and free them for heading cattle and cut timber trains. Other improvements we found over the K-27 include rings on the burner tubes to regulate the air mixture, and an improved jet holder in stead of the "bent copper tube" found on the K-27 and the C-21. Although I must admit that our next problem with one of our engines will be the first. Our next outing is Sinsheim where all being well the full train will be running. K-28 + 2 Baggage, 1 RPO, 2 pass. cars and the observation car on the end is getting on for 50Kg. OOps I forgot to mention that the K-28 also has a hand water pump in the tender. In my opinion a not needed luxury. The K-27 runs for between 55 minutes and 1 hour without any top up. I also find that I can tank water via the Goodall valve faster than the hand pump then she will need gas. The gas tank is very large and this also takes some time to fill.
A fast way to take on water is to use a garden pressure pray container as used for praying insecticides only new and unused for this purpose. Fill with distilled water, pump her up with the hand pump, put a self made reduction in the outlet line to fit the Goodall, push the plastic tube in and open the valve. That's it refilled in seconds and off you go. Mine is 5 Ltr. capacity and needs to be pumped up to pressure twice a day. The content fills the K-27 at least 5 times ands the 3 cyl Shay about 20 times. Saves an awful lot of finger exercise on those bottles. So I'm now being allowed back in the working area to enjoy my Xmas meal which my wife was cooking, The bottle of wine on my desk has looks like it has sprung a leak, (or is it a leek)? any way not the Welsh vegetable. The content has sunk considerably during this mail. Walt, did Mr Lunkenheimer get a present from you?? Merry Christmas all. Bert in "SUNNY" Austria.
