to all.
I had the pleasure of being allowed to drive an Accucraft Garret at
Sinsheim. A beauty in any language. I wonder if anyone has noticed that for
some reason many models seem to get the "simplified Walschaerts" valve gear
upside down. eg the K-27 and the K-28 models have the radius rod at the top
of the die block when the loco is the direction usually run. On the two
mentioned locos this is of course forwards. The prototype would be at the
bottom of the block. The Garrets usually had the second engine (the one
under the cab) also with the radius rod at the bottom when running forwards
even though compared with the front engine it runs backwards. The model from
Accucraft has one up and one down. Aster seem to have got it right on some
of the engines I have seen except the Garret which is also one up and one
down. The engines run super and the valve gear can easily be corrected by
moving the return crank 180° where needed. They were so set that the
comparatively straight line of the valve gear when set at the bottom when
running in the direction usually run to avoid wear.!
Now the question. Does anybody know if there is a reason for the "slip up"
or is it intentional, and for which reasons? I must admit I have not met
anyone who has noticed this point in the modelling world and as said the
engines all run first class and I further realize this can be classed as
"Rivet counting", but I'll take the risk.
Bert
