Is this the mike chaney of catatonk shay fame? I recently purchased one of these fine engines on ebay and am having one or two problems, the details of which I posted to mls recently.
I'd really appreciate your help - how can I contact you directly. ----- Original Message ----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Small-scale live steam discussions <[email protected]> Sent: Fri Jun 22 00:15:26 2007 Subject: Re: [SSLiveSteam] Slow down Catboat15 (who he?) wrote:- > Engines > designed for slow freight hauling had small drivers for more torque and > less > speed, while the fast locomotives for express passenger service had large > diameter drivers. Very true. The old time CME's rule of thumb was "one inch of driver diameter per mph of designed top speed". This equates, in all scales, to about 365 rpm, which itself is determined by the rate at which steam can be got into and out of the cylinders. Some stationary engines, such as that fitted to the Class A Climax for instance, were designated "high speed" and might manage anything up to 600 rpm.
