Back in the days when I made rail benders, rail, joiners, etc...I did buy
steam oil in 5 gallon pails and re-package it in pints and quarts for
resale.
A word of caution...many of the local outlets for the major oil companies
(Mobil, Chevron, etc) will sell you what is now "steam oil", but really is
not! The viscosity is right, BUT, for our purposes, steam oil should contain
some lard or tallow. The majority of the oil sold today does not contain
either. They are formulated to be used in modern machinery and the benefits
of tallow are no longer important.
A few years ago someone in the NW was selling steam oil that did contain
tallow, but it was not 'homogenized', and they seperated rather
quickly...however, it was still satisfactory if you mixed it up again before
using it.
Keep your steam up!
