I remember when the U.P. Daylight was making a supposed "last run" years
ago. I had forgotten about it as I had to work during the hours it was to
be visible. I was at my desk working on a computer program when I heard
that big Northern rumble by the back of the office. No camera at work, no time
to run down to the tracks so grabbed the telephone and called home. Asked
my wife to grab the camera and rush down to the railroad tracks and get some
photos. She did grab the camera and our dog, jump in the car and rush down
to the crossing at Nogales and Valley Blvd. Got some great photos. But
the interesting part of the story is how she told me the tracks were lined
with railroad fans all with cameras, sound recorders etc that she had to
crowd her way into the mass to get some photos.
A common sight at the Los Angeles City Live Steamer track in the park is
the model of that Northern run and owned by Dick Priest. At 1-1/2 inch scale
that is still a big locomotive, makes my 3/4 inch scale 4-4-0 "American"
look like a toy (which it is of course) But Dick can not pick up his engine
and put in the back of his car which I can do (two trips, one for the loco,
one for the tender and riding car)
