I guess I can claim some heredity for my interest in locomotives and
trains. Uncle on my Mother's side was freight agent at Williams, AZ and his
wife, my aunt was a railroad nurse for Santa Fe. On the other side my Dad's
brother worked on the "Big Boys" on the Nevada side of the mountain. He was
sent to Europe near the end of W.W. II to help rebuild the rolling equipment
that had been damaged and worn out during the fighting. We tried to hook up
over there (I was a combat infantry man in the 301st Infantry) but, never
were at the same place at the same time.

But after the war was over and my uncle had retired I did the chance to
take him out to the Los Angeles Live Steamer tracks and he got to ride behind
a "real steam engine" one more time in his life. I still have some home
movies of him riding behind an engine on the 1-1/2 inch scale track with a
grin plastered on his face.
