It was last October when I asked a question here on the list about alcohol boiler designs, flue tubes and such. I'm finished with that project. I would like to thank everyone for their input and I was able to learn a lot from that project. The original intent was to gather the skills necessary for building a coal fired boiler. So here I am starting off with even less that I had last year. (I had a chunk of two inch copper pipe that started the whole thing.) If anyone cares to follow the outline of the conversion of my Bumble bee from propane to alcohol read this link:
http://www.mylargescale.com/Community/Forums/tabid/56/aff/11/aft/114328/afv/topic/Default.aspx Anyway, here's my first question. In the K.N. Harris book "Model Boilers & Boilermaking" it states on page 131 "In a locomotive boiler the gas area through the tubes should not be less than 1/7th of the grate area and may without detriment be as high as 1/6th." In my other book on the subject "Model Locomotive Boilers" by Martin Evans, I can't seem to find any reference to a grate / flue ration. I did take the time to figure the grate size and flue tube dimensions from three of the illustrated boiler designs and run through the math to compare the area of the grate to the area of the flues. 6.875 square inches of grate to 1.624 total flue area (not accounting for superheaters in the larger flues) comes close to 1/4th 16.7095 sq in grate to 2.805 flue area is close to 1/6th. 21.656 sq in grate to 4.1672 flue are is close to 1/5th. This seems to be kind of not in alignment. Is there anyone out there who might be able to offer assistance?
