Dave, The flue area / grate area ratio on my coal-fired boiler for an RH Billy turned out to be 1:9.5, and it steams just fine. The high ratio was not by plan but because of my own miscalculation when figuring out the required grate area. My goal had been Harris' 1:6 and 1:7 guidelines.
Earlier I had researched, as you have done, ratios from other gauge 1 boiler designs. I found ratios from 1:4 up to 1:12 or so. There are other factors that come into play, obviously, that determine whether a boiler/firebox will burn coal and make steam. Harris' numbers are a good starting point, though. Remember, too, that Harris was interested in larger locos (ride on and ride behind) which might have more exacting boiler performance requirements than gauge 1 locos do. What do you figure is the maximum grate size that you can get into the loco you're planning to convert? Is it the same Bumble Bee?
