Best to add these commands where, in /boot/loader.conf, or /etc/ rc.conf?  And to be clear, do I need to physically add root and any other user to the _sndio group as well?  Thank you.

Run service command as root. The first should enable it in /etc/rc.conf, the second will start the sndiod. It will start automatically after the reboot. I'm not sure if it's necessary to add some users to the _sndio group. I don't have VMware guest, nor do I have sndio enabled on my desktop computer.
The user nad group is used by sndio daemon.

You should enable the service and start the service.

         service sndiod enable
         service sndiod start
