I think the 1GB were just chosen in the documentation to be safe
during development so that nobody can complain. This is not a number
that was chosen as a design goal and by this it confirms nothing.

I understand that the zz> shell is only part of the full launcher
right now? IMO memory is indeed not a problem for the full launcher as
it comes with all and everything that we have to offer. I would
suggest to not include the zz> shell in the stable launcher to make
the stable launcher more optimized for productive environments.

IMO the launchers that are provided by the community are just
examples. People, who really use parts of Stanbol in their products
should create their own launcher configurations anyway. Then they can
decide what is in there. It is good to have examples like the full
launcher that demonstrate what we have to offer.
