maybe discussing a concrete example makes this more clear...

Now what happens should I attempt to piggyback the users.jabber.org
connection on the jabber.org connection? jabber.org kills my stream.
Really? Why?
<host-unknown/>.

If jabber.org really does host users.jabber.org, why does it return a
<host-unknown/> error?

Does the machine hermes.jabber.org really host users.jabber.org?
I think it does not - judging from behaviour. But you are the person
with access to the configuration files :-)

RFC 3920 says that
| the Receiving Server SHOULD accept subsequent <db:result/> packets (
| e.g., validation requests sent to a subdomain or other hostname
| serviced by the Receiving Server)

How does the originating server find out if a subdomain or hostname is
actually serviced by the receiving server?

From the outside, how do I tell the difference between conference.jabber.org
and
users.jabber.org?
Both have SRV records which point to hermes.jabber.org:5269
- the machine that hosts jabber.org
