I agree with you that XEP-60 doesn't cover all needed features. But I think that it's better to make app just work without and then just extend pubsub with more generic way. And another my point of view is never copy twitter or any other web project since they have other problems and specifics. I think that xmpp-based apps may be better and more scalable but they don't need to copy web apps, they need to follow them own way.
