Is this really a big problem? I haven't heard complaints about this in
years. It definitely was a problem in the early days of Jabber
technologies, which was why we used to have things like the Jabber
User Directory (JUD) at the jabber.org service.

That said, we might want to integrate better with WebFinger. The topic
came up during discussion in the telephony devroom at FOSDEM on
Sunday, and all of the panelists (from the main track talk on
decentralized communication technologies) agreed that WebFinger
provides a good single point of discovery for such information.
