Thanks for the info on batteries. About the rest--I can explain.

Not to worry. You nailed the hardware prices (battery not included). 
Most of the $1200 went to upgrade software that I haven't been able 
to use since I switched from 8.0 to 9.1: I had been using Norton 
Utilities 4.1, TypeStyler 2, Spring Cleaning 1.0.1, and two outmoded 
virus programs. I've also ordered Virtual PC (which requires the G3 
or G4 that I haven't had). And there were two others that I won't 
mention because one of them slips my mind and the other is rather 
controversial and costs $479. Nothing from Microsoft; my first Mac 
was the 512K Fat Mac in 1985, and since then I've never used anything 
at all from Microsoft and I never will. Matter of principle. Not a 
nickel of tribute. Hence the need for Virtual PC.
