        I'm running a tanzania APS "M*Power" with a 200mhz640e and it
loves System 9.1. It even worked faster than Sys 8 with only 32mg
RAM (although with cheap RAM, like all rational people, I later
upgraded and maxed it out). Set virtual memory to the lowest it will
go (at least the lowest above 64Mg). In my experience, Microsoft
software likes it that way.

Commentary above is correct: some of Apple's system disks
are machine specific. I upgraded with my system 9.1 that came with
OSX.

I find that use of Apple's "system update" program is
extremely useful. However once or twice, when downloading a bunch
of updates at once, I might get a crash. So for the larger updates,
I get the system update to tell me what I need, and then I download
them one at a time by hand. (Of course the best time is before
10AM eastern time).

ALSO: We often forget about this, but as long as you are
doing this, do a complete low-level rebuild of your disk and use the
new formatting and drivers. If you don't do this, Sys. 9.1 is not
going to be as happy as her parents intended.

BY THE WAY: I assume You all know that you REALLY REALLY
REALLY need to download Microsoft's Office 98 patches to stop Excel
macro viruses. DO IT NOW.
