My StarMax that I gave to my son is running OS 9.1. At the time (and
now) I understand that's as far as it goes. It is running fine; he
prints, connects to the internet, etc. OS 9.2 was designed to ease the
transition to OS X, I don't know the specifics of what that means but
that is the word from Apple. If you get OS 9.1 on and it is fine, then
don't worry about it. I have heard people talk about 9.2 being more
stable but that makes no sense to me, I think it's probably extension
conflicts. With any older Mac like the StarMax, I heartily suggest that
once you get the OS installed, you spend some time in the Extensions
Manager and turn off the things you don't need, there will be many. It
will start and run faster and the system will use less precious RAM.
As far as installing an OS from an iMac CD if that's how I read it, I
doubt very much that will work.
