I have always upgraded OS incrementally. 7.6, 8.1, 8.5, 8.6, 9.0, 9.1 Don't know if that's important, just the way i grew with it. Apple recommends HFS+ (extended format) for 8.1 and up. Here's a old list of possible sources for cds. jr
