I highly recommend running OS 8.6 and USB adapter support 1.4.1.
Prior to those versions, USB tended to be somewhat unstable on the
Mac. With OS 8.6 and USB 1.4.1, my SM was as stable as any computer
I have used, it just didn't crash and USB worked as advertised,
install the drivers and plug it in and it worked.
