I'm headed off for dinner, so I'll just toss in a few words before I go:

Mozilla 1.1 is appallingly slow on a machine this old, so presumably
Netscape 6 is, too. Netscape 4.7 is quite fast, although I find it rather
clunky in use. Maybe a NS 4.7-equivalent version of Mozilla would be a nice
consideration.

IE 5 is rather nice - it used to crash the OS an awful lot, but I've been
using it again for various things these days and it's generally been
perfectly stable, so it might have been a conflict I unknowingly solved. IE
5 is very fast at rendering pages, so is one recommendation.

iCab is my browser of choice, though I will admit up-front that it rather
does lack in terms of HTML rendering ability - some pages are a mess or
almost unusable with it, but most sites look fine or good enough. It does,
though, offer a wealth of features that IE does not, such as a much more
comprehensive download manager (and page/site ripper), comprehensive ad
filtering and JavaScript action filtering on an optional per-URL basis, HTTP
download resuming (server permitting, and often only with the aid of a
special procedure I can explain), etc.

However, if you feel that speed and rendering quality are more important
that auxiliary features, then you might want to consider IE, or something
else like Opera. You can also opt to have both to hand and switch as
necessary, as I do.

- Daniel.
