Still trying to figure out a fix for this problem. I tried with VM off
and it still happened. I have turned on Virtual memory to try to see if
that helps.
I did the usual stuff like rebuild the desk top, defrag and throw out
finder and system preferences. It didn't help. I will try some of the
other suggestions

Here comes the update. The exact message I get is "the program was unable
to load the image due to low system memory." This message usually happens
when I am using Internet Explorer and I have been doing web surfing. The
computer doesn't freeze up at this point but usually will freeze a few
browser clicks later unless I quit IE. It does load the image when this
message appears.

Since it is saying it has low system memory for the image could this be a
video ram problem?
I down loaded Memory Mapper. I have been experimenting with memory mapper to
see if I can understand what it is doing.
My computer shows free space of 68044 above the system heap
Next is Internet Explorer with 37163 free space above it.

In my own quick fix to this I will l try using a different Browser for a
while to see if that helps. I had tried using Mozilla but I feel that is
major slow performer.
Anyone know where to get a download of Netscape 4.78
Thanks,
