LOL
I can only hope you didn't mean it to sound quite like that, but even if you
did, I can assure you on last testing I was only 17% asshole.
Not that I'm feeling defensive this week, but a couple of points if I may.
First though, let me express my gratitude to people that wrote me personally
and posted to voice support and concern, thanks very much.
Going back to the beginning of this, I never meant to disparage those that use
floppies. The question didn't state they HAD to use floppies. Michael made the
point there are better, bigger, faster, more reliable methods to transport and
store data and I agreed with him. Being on this board I realize there are
several experts here certainly with more knowledge than I on a wide variety of
topics. I often post a first response mostly because of my time zone and my
hours. I know someone else will chime in with additional comments and a
different perspective. Hopefully the end result is a well rounded and correct
and helpful answer. If you don't like mine or anyone else's answer you can
certainly say so in a civil and courteous manner and explain why. Hey, you
sometimes get what you pay for, it's not like we get a big salary for this (in
fact I've PAID).
The "mystery" post did get me thinking though. There certainly is a strong
impetus in the computer culture to get one to keep spending money, upgrading
software, buying new equipment and resulting in spending time learning new
stuff, disrupting your work flow, piling up obsolete equipment, and did I
mention spending money? Apple certainly seems to be a leader in this with
taking out the floppy drive, killing OS 9, pretty much forcing X on us, serial
then USB then FireWire etc. It's better design, faster access, better
reliability, more universal, more fun, frustrating, discouraging,
overwhelming. I mentioned the money thing right?
Just so you know and can sleep at night, I contacted the original poster
asking about floppies, we came to terms and I might actually have helped him
not to mention the posts afterward that I knew were coming (see previous
comment).
I myself haven't used a floppy in years but like I said that got me wondering
so I posted this thread which got a fairly lively response. Those interested:
http://dealmac.com/forums/read.html?f=1&i=927952&t=927952
Responses run the gamut, from like mine to having to deal with PCs and using
school equipment, to keeping the coffee table level.
So any ways, my main point here is this has been a very supportive,
informative, and friendly place as a Mac discussion board should be. Any
oddities experienced this past week are just that, an aberration. George
