Stan-- I have virtually the same set-up except for a JoeCard G3 upgrade.
And had a similar experience with installing 9.1. What worked for me was
to do a clean install on a separate partition from the boot partition
with OS 8.6. Then rebooted and rebuilt the desktops (depress Option &
Command during boot-up) of all my partitions. Opened the Start-up Disk
control panel and selected the new 9.1 boot partition. Rebooted and
immediately depressed *continuously* the Option & Command & P & R keys
to zap the pram until it had bonged *5 times*, and then released the
keys to let the boot-up proceed. And 9.1 loaded successfully. Hope this
works for you...
