has anyone tried or even considered using a 4.5v adapter in the Starmax instead of always worrying about replacing batteries? just a thought.

Might work, one caution is that most 4.5v adapters expect a load (current flow of some moderate amount as part of the voltage regulation scheme), without a load the voltage often rises to 6 or 7 volts. That could cause trouble.

Some people have made battery packs using 3 garden variety alkalines, and that seems to work fine. The main reason people haven't tried too many things is that the "real" battery isn't that hard to find.

Could be worse, I have a few Mac IIfx computers with two soldered on batteries. Fortunately they just lose the date and go to defaults.
