It certainly sounds as though you are doing everything right. The only thing I could think of is that the connectors have an alignment pin (they should only go in one way). The other idea, which is almost too trivial to mention, is that sliding the motherboard in and out may put tension or pressure on where you have velcro'ed the battery. Nah.

I haven't opened up my 5000/250 in a long time so I'm remembering the location from years ago.
