Al,
As someone suggested, this sounds a lot like a sticking drive.  I had 
some experience years ago with a Mac with a drive that would stick 
whenever it was cold but worked fine once it was warmed up.  In the 
morning it took a good rap on the case just when the drive should be 
starting up to get it moving.  If you are concerned about tapping the 
drive during the start up, repeated startups may shake it loose.  I 
expect that a drive replacement may be in order if sticking is the 
problem and certainly a thorough back up is in order if you get it 
running.
