In the past, when I have set my machine to 1280x1024, I was sure that it used to drop down to 256 colours, which is consistent with the assumption that I have the default of 2 Mb of VRAM. However, after putting a new screen on the Mac and going to try it at 1280x1024, it's remaining in 16-bit colour. But 1280x1024x16-bit is 2.5 Mb...
Is there some trick I don't know about that lets the OS magically find itself a spare 0.5 Mb for video, or has this been upgraded to 4 Mb VRAM and I just didn't notice? (Neither ASP or my old TechTool give a video RAM readout) And for the UK StarMax users, anyone know of a reasonably priced, good quality 17" screen that will support StarMax video at 1280x960 (or, at least, 1152x870) at 75 Hz, and preferably aperture grille (AKA Trinitron)? This screen I have now works really well on a Windows PC at 1152x850 (or whatever Windows uses), but at a Mac's 1152x870, the sides of the picture bunch up and I get a vivid white line down the left hand side (it can't handle the rates and scan lines properluy in that mode). 19" would be acceptable, although I sit close to the screen and low down and I don't want something that's right up in the air =P Basically I just don't want to buy a new monitor and find that it can't handle the scan line count/scan rates of 1280x960 or gives a badly distorted 1152x870 picture like this old screen does. But running 1024x768 on a 17" screen is a stupid waste (good thing this screen was only 5 =) -- StarMax is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> StarMax list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/starmax.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/starmax%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
