Hi All,

A big thanks to Terry and Kari who responded to my initial question about getting file sharing to start up properly.

Terry's idea about having separate names for the various networked machines certainly helped.

Another big help came from following the suggestions found on Apples Support web site. Specifically, the page that was particularly helpful is at:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=11368

This seems to be one of those articles that's actually worth printing out, for future reference.

Again, many thanks.

Cheers,

Bill Taylor

in the tcp/ip make sure you have connect via ethernet if that is what you are using for a cable
apple talk has to be enabled if I remember correctly...
PS there's only one version of 9.1

Also Bill. . .

In the File Sharing CPs (of each machine)
. . . I found that having different names for
the owners of each machine helped me once.

Go Apple Menu --> Control Panels --> Appletalk
a dialogue box will ask you if you want Appletalk made active
(yes) select the connection port.

Then go to the Chooser.

Remember later, that you can't print with Appletalk active
if Appletalk is using the Printer port.

Hi All,

I have two machines that are running OS 9, one is G3 running OS 9.2.2, and the other is a Starmax running OS 9.1.*. [Not exactly sure off hand which variation of OS 9.1 is running on this machine.

I don't know why, but whenever I try to start up file sharing on either of these machines, I'm presented with a dialogue box informing me that: "File Sharing could not be enabled'.

What would be really nice to know is why file sharing can't be started, and what I need to do to get it to run?

In both cases, my network connections are fine, and working properly. My other machines indicate as much.

Anyone have any ideas on this matter?

Thanks muchly in advance.
