Hi Bill,
There are three possible to solutions that I can think of for your problem.
The first would be to reset the PRAM. This is done by holding down the command and option keys, along with the 'P' and 'R' keys. Your machine should chime and then begin the startup process, and then stop and chime again, to again try starting the startup process. Let the machine chime at least 3 times.
Next, release the 'P' and 'R' keys, but keep holding the commend and option keys down. Your machine should continue with the startup process, but once the Finder is running, you should be presented with a dialogue asking if you want to rebuild the desktop file on your startup drive, and then each additional hard drive attached, if present.
I find this works as a general solution for many odd problems. And is also part of good general maintenance.
Assuming this doesn't solve your printing problem, try deleting the preference file that corresponds to your print driver. In this case, it will likely be called 'LaserWriter 8 Prefs'.
Again, this is another way of solving many common problems related to either your OS, or any number of program that placec preference files in the preferences directory. Simply delete them, and the program should be set to it's default state, having automatically set a new uncorrupted preference file.
If this still doesn't solve your printing problem, check to confirm your Laserwriter driver software works with your printer. To confirm this, you'll have to check the tech support section of Apple's web site. Assuming that it does, open the Chooser, and select the Laserwriter printer driver. Your printer should show up in the window on the right of the chooser. Select your printer, and then click the 'Setup' button. In the following dialogue box, click on 'auto setup'.
Sometimes, there are different versions of the same printer driver for a given printer, and perhaps the wrong one has been accidentally selected. This auto setup process should correct this if this is the problem.
If none of these work, then try replicating the problem in another program. If it doesn't happen, then try deleting the preference file for the corresponding troublesome program.
I had the same printer, but upgraded it to the IIg. It was working fine, and then I started getting 'dreaded' paper jams - an indication that perhaps the printer is coming to the end of it's life. Then again, it all depends on how much printing your machine has done. Mine seems to be in this state, but I've been advised to clean the pick-up rollers, a likely cause of the paper jams. I mention this because perhaps this is what you machine needs, a good cleaning E-mail me off list, and perhaps I can be of more help if the other solutions don't work.
Well, that about exhausts me knowledge on this matter. Perhaps others on this mail-list can offer more help.
All the best with it.
Bill.
