Bill Hatchell asked:
Anyone have any suggestions for fine-tuning OS 8.6 on a StarMax 4000?

I ran OS 8.6 on my StarMax 4200DT for years, grudgingly moving on to 9.1 just recently, about the time Panther 10.3.6 came out - gotta move with the times. 8)

The list below is the pick of the bunch from my OS 8.6 volume, now
relegated to a back-up role. It goes way beyond the "fine-tuning"
asked for, but I've found all of it to be essential/useful/fun. And
it all works well with 8.6.

My 'Max has a G3/300 upgrade now, but most of this stuff ran on the
original 604e/200 just fine. A lot of it can be googled for easily,
but some may be difficult or impossible to find now - Conflict
Catcher, SoundJam, even older versions of current apps. Old Mac
magazine cover CDs can be useful here, and maybe MacUpdate's pre-OS X
section:

http://www2.macupdate.com/index.php?os=macos

The version numbers shown shouldn't be taken as the last to work with
OS 8.6 - later versions may work too, but these are the ones I know
about. I've not repeated the things Terry Graham already mentioned in
this thread, though you don't need OS 9.x to run QuickTime 6.0.2 (and
probably not 6.0.3, though I don't have that).

----------------
Here's the list:

Apple stuff newer, I think, than OS 8.6 (free if you can find it):

UTILITIES
Disk Copy 6.3.3
Disk First Aid 8.6
Drive Setup 2.0.4
QuickDraw 3D 1.6
QuickTime 6.0.2

EXTENSIONS
Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.4.3 (if your CD drive works with the OS 8.6
driver, it should work with this newer version)
Game Sprockets 1.7.5
URL Access Update 2.3
USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 (only if you have USB)

----

3RD-PARTY CONTROL PANELS ETC.
ATM Lite 4.6.2 (Adobe, free)
BeHierarchic 4.2 (much better than Apple Menu Options, shareware)
Conflict Catcher 8.1 (extensions etc. manager, Casady & Greene, defunct)
CopyAgent 1.0.1 (faster file copying, good for backing-up, Connectix)
Joliet Volume Access 2.0.3 (handles hybrid, Windows & Unix CDs better
than Mac OS, shareware)
PopChar Pro 1.5 (menu-bar selector for any character in current font,
shareware)

APPLICATIONS
AppleWorks 6.2.8
BBEdit Lite 6.1 (great text editor, free)
Toast 5.02 Titanium (last version compatible with OS 8.6)
GraphicConverter 4.5.4 (excellent image viewer/editor, shareware)
Sigma Chess 5.1.3 (incredible chess prog, free)
iGetter 1.9.5 (download manager)
MacSOUP 2.4.6 (Usenet newsreader, shareware)
Audion 3.0.2 (audio player/encoder, now free)
MacAmp 2.0.1 (audio player/encoder *see below*)
SoundJam MP Plus 2.5.3 (my favourite MP3 encoder/player. Died and got
reborn as iTunes)
SoundApp 2.7.3 (plays many different audio file formats, free)

UTILITIES
DiskTracker 2.2.2 (CD/disk cataloger, shareware)
DiskWarrior 2.1 (the best(?) disk repair utility)
DragThing 4.5 (very good "Dock" utility, shareware)
icWord 2.1 (reads Word and AppleWorks word-pro documents)
Norton Utilities 6.0
StuffIt Deluxe, Expander etc. 6.0

HATE 'EM BUT NEED 'EM
RealPlayer 8 (free)
Windows Media Player 7.1.2 (free)

BROWSER PLUG-INS
Shockwave 10.0 (free)
Flash 6.0 (free)
-----------

* The reason for including MacAmp 2.0.1 is that, with the right
plug-in, you can use it to record audio from *any* application -
including RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, internet audio streams,
games, etc. It saves the audio to disk in AIFF format. If you can
play it, you can record it.

The plug-in is called Audio Hijack. Sound familiar? It's the ancestor
of Rogue Amoeba's OS X app that does the same thing. As far as I
know, this is the *only* way to rip Real Audio, streams etc. on
pre-OS X systems. But even if you can find MacAmp now, it probably
won't include the plug-in, which was a separate download from Subband
Software's web site, long gone. You do get two limited and early
"experimental" plug-ins, but they're buggy. Worth hunting down the
later one.

Cheers,
Chris Adams.
