I run GaugePRO; it made 3500 passes but does not report any fault.

The sequence of opening applications has a big effect, and my problems are
similar to those reported by another fellow. He writes his problems occurred
after installing OS 8.5 - but I still use 8.1.

Well I'm hoping that this is the last time I have to write about
the OS 8.5 3rd party RAM issue. If you've read this information
before, I've changed some things throughout the whole article,
so read the whole thing again. I am still not 100% crash free,
but in the past few days I've had only about 4 or 5 Type 1, 2 or
3 errors, most of which occured when quitting Netscape. I hope
my writing has helped some people. I can remember the first
night after upgrading to OS 8.5 when I almost cried myself to
sleep. My computer is now a pleasure to use again, and I will
even go so far as to say it is now just about as stable as it was
when I was running OS 8.1 (fingers crossed).

Because Mac OS 8.5 handles memory differently than previous
versions, there is the possibility that 3rd party RAM may cause
instability problems with your computer. This happens even if
the RAM is exactly up to specs for your computer, or if it is even
better than your computer requires. For instance, my
computer requires 70ns RAM or faster, my RAM upgrade runs
at 60ns, and it?s still problematic. The problem usually arises if
you have ?cheap? RAM, but I have no verification on this point.
Read on for a possible solution.

The Symptoms:
Type 1 errors, Type 2 errors and Type 3 errors in just about
any program.
This happens mostly in internet applications like Netscape
Communicator, Internet Explorer, AOL, or even iCab. However,
it's also happened in Adobe Photoshop, ClarisWorks and Claris
Emailer too. These errors can happen in just about any
program, but usually only in internet programs, or ones that
are memory intensive. In the browsers, it can happen for no
apparent reason whatsoever, usually when a page is loading.
?The application ?Finder? has unexpectedly quit. You should
save your work in other open applications and restart the
computer?
This usually happens with no error number, as shown above. It
mostly happens when dragging and dropping items into new
folders, or after another program has crashed.
Possible startup problems.
The most frequent problem during startup is a Bus Error. A
bomb dialogue box usually comes up after the first one or two
extensions load, it tells you to restart with extensions off.
Trying to restart without extensions works, but trying to start up
normally usually doesn't. Other possibilities are many different
crashes when control panels are loading. I?ve had crashes that
were supposedly ?caused? (at least, as the error message says)
by FinderPop, GoMac, File Exchange, Extensions Manager and
Default Folder (yes the most recent versions). The errors
reported are usually Address Errors, or Instruction Exceptions.

After posting many notes regarding RAM upgrades and OS 8.5,
without getting any other ideas. I decided to call Data Memory
Systems, the people who I bought my RAM upgrade from, and
see what their take on the situation was.

The reason that I believe RAM is the problem, is because the
order of the RAM chips in the computer's memory banks has a
huge effect on the stability of the computer. However, the tech
support guy at DMS believes that OS 8.5 is the ONLY cause of the
problem. I tried to convince him that 8.5 may simply be
handling the RAM in such a way that their "cheap" RAM can't
handle. He practically said, "that's the most idiotic thing I've
ever heard, you're such a moron." He kept telling me that "our
memory is no different from anyone else's." He also proceeded
to tell me that they installed 8.5 on a few computers, and
removed it after many days of, you guessed it, instability
problems. I then said "well, those computers all had YOUR RAM
in them, right?" Again, I got, "our memory is no different from
anyone else's." He told me about how Apple is working very
hard on OS 8.6 to fix this problem (I tried 8.6a5c2 for a few
days, and I still had Type 1, 2 and 3 errors), but he also said
that Apple recommends not to in
stalling 8.5 on computers anymore. BS! I don't doubt that this
guy knows what he's talking about, but he could have toned
down the attitude. He was even willing to replace my RAM just
so he could prove that it wouldn't fix anything, now if I could
only find that darn invoice.
