The utility I start with is the old <http://eshop.macsales.com/Tech/FTP/newertech/GaugePRO11.sit> which has a decent RAM check built in. Boot with extensions off and let it run overnight.
I run GaugePRO; it made 3500 passes but does not report any fault.
The sequence of opening applications has a big effect, and my problems are similar to those reported by another fellow. He writes his problems occurred after installing OS 8.5 - but I still use 8.1.
With that number of passes you can be pretty confident that the memory is ok. To be certain, you have to run the test with each of the three DIMM modules in the center slot and all 3 slots occupied. With all 3 populated the center bank is completely available for testing. Since the problems are occurring semi-randomly, I suspect your RAM is ok. A bad ram in the system or low memory area (where you can't test without moving the DIMMs) makes the computer basically unusable.
As for 8.1, I have not run it in quite some time. I would suggest the standard debugging steps starting with rebuilding the desktop. Also make sure you have free space on the boot partition of at least 20% of the total size. Beyond that, do you have Virtual Memory turned on and if so you have to have at least that amount of VM listed as free space on your hard disk. Do you have any type of disk utility that can check the integrity of the directory structure, if so run it. If anybody else has suggestions for 8.1 debugging please add them in.
