OK, I got convinced and installed OS 9.1 replacing the old 8.6 and I find there is no sluggishness, at least none detectable to me. Seems 9.1 runs just fine on the old 604e but I also have the maximum installed RAM which may make a difference. I think I'll rummage around however and locate an old 7.6 CD-ROM driver to see if it makes any difference. Presently, I simply cannot boot from a CD at all, so must boot from a 7.6 boot ( zip) disk I created, then pop in the OS installation disk, or the TechToolPro utility disk and run them that way.

I may just eventually replace the original CD-ROM drive.
