OK, I got convinced and installed OS 9.1 replacing the old 8.6 and I
find there is no sluggishness, at least none detectable to me. Seems
9.1 runs just fine on the old 604e but I also have the maximum
installed RAM which may make a difference. I think I'll rummage around
however and locate an old 7.6 CD-ROM driver to see if it makes any
difference. Presently, I simply cannot boot from a CD at all, so must
boot from a 7.6 boot ( zip) disk I created, then pop in the OS
installation disk, or the TechToolPro utility disk and run them that
way.
I may just eventually replace the original CD-ROM drive.
