I'm sure you're right that the battery may be the culprit. I was curious then, why did it startup (several times) if the battery is dead?

One time after I had zapped the cudo button, I took out the battery in order to replace it. In the meantime another family member plugged it in and started it up. So it does work without the battery, but I guess you have to shutdown and pull out the plug before you boot it up again.
