Hi all,

I was recently given a StarMax 4000/160 and am trying to get it up and
running. (It had a minimal install of MacOS 8.1 that was having issues
with the CD-ROM, and I don't have the install cd).

I downloaded the free System 7.5.3 from Apple's site (on a Linux/i386
machine), along with a DiskTools (w/ 7.5) and a Network Access Floppy.
I was able to transfer the disk images to the maclone using StuffIt! for
Windows and a floppy hfs formatted using hfsutils. Neither floppy
worked (both claimed that they didn't work on this type of Macintosh
when I tried to boot with them), so I resorted to using a MacOS 8.1 Disk
Tools floppy I found on a university help desk website, which worked.

Once I mounted the System 7.5.3 disk image (having booted from the Disk
Tools floppy), I tried to run the install which failed saying that it
did not recognize this Macintosh. Any ideas how to make it work (and
can it) ?

Also, I'm a little confused by the OS names. Is MacOS 7.5.3 the same as
System 7.5.3? When did the naming change from System x.x.x to MacOS x.x.x ?

Is the Motorola-licensed System 7.5.3 different than the normal one from
Apple (and hence my problems) ?

I am considering buying MacOS 9 (since the lowendmac starmax page says
up to 9.1 works). since my primary interested in the Mac is to see what
the 'Classic' environment is like, at least until I can afford a newer
Mac that can do OS X.

I have to say that, for whatever reason, the 8.1 interface just seems
smoother and easier, even when I am fighting with the machine, than I am
used to in an OS on Intel hardware. I am used to K6-2/P-II machines
with 384/96 MiB running Debian/Win98SE, and they are both slower than
the StarMax with OS 8.1. There's also some quality that I can't quite
pin down, expect to say that it just 'feels' better.

TIA,

Daniel
