Eheheh.. that's more than my x86 box!  How much memory does OSX need as a 
SENSIBLE minimum?

Well, I'd kind of expect that. Linux will do that, and Windopes 95 and 98 
would certainly take a stab at running under those circumstances (just 
witnessed such an incident today, as it happens). XP doesn't simply because 
MS want to try to force you to use the same hardware (more or less) with any 
particular copy of their OS that theyve sold - and if your PC dies, theyd 
really rather prefer you dont reuse yur perfectly good XP CD in a new macine.
