Jim, If I read you correctly, you can boot from a system CD and also from an external SCSI drive but in neither case will the internal IDE HD be recognized. This suggests that most likely your internal HD is toast but there could be other causes. I think the second most likely cause is a bad wiring connection associated with the HD and it might be wise to unplug and reconnect this associated wiring. I'm not sure why the jump drive is not being recognized when you are booted from the external drive but it must be an OS problem where some driver is missing, maybe for the USB card. As someone has suggested, it would be good to remove the internal HD if possible and check it out in another computer. If the HD is bad, your best solution might be to purchase a new IDE HD and install it in place of the bad one. They are relatively cheap now and you can always install it in an external case and use it as backup for other systems if you don't want to keep using the SM. Install your system on the new drive from the CD, update drivers as necessary and you should be back in business if the drive is the only problem. S.
