I had this problem (SM5000/275; OS 7.6.1) and the cause was a physical bad boot block on the HD. In my case I was able to use Disk Warrior to access the HD and rebuild the directory. However, since there was a physical HD defect, I had to reformat the HD using Drive Set Up and then run Norton Disk Doctor to segregate the bad block. It would probably have been cheaper (in time) to have just replaced the hard drive, but since the data had already been backed up, I enjoyed the challenge. C.J.
