SCSI and IDE (ATA) drives have different connectors.
You most surely took an IDE drive from a mac that used those (a
Performa most likely) if the same connectors fit. The internal SCSI
harness in the max is a big colorful bundle of strap, usually.

I wonder if I can add my own problem to the discussion--
I upgraded the stock CD-ROM to a 52x CD-ROM a while back (forget the
brand-- a very common one) and it sort of worked for a while but now
the OS "finds" the drive at regular intervals and wants to format or
eject it (there's no "just deal with it" option unfortunately. Using
OS9.1 on a 'max/G3.
Using Apple CD/CVD extension, contemporary of 9.1, and iTunes extension
is disabled.
Thanks for any help!
