Hey...

I bought an Apple branded SCSI CD drive for my StarMax 3000 (Newer G3,
OS 8.6). When I disconnect the original IDE CD-ROM, the machine won't
even attempt to boot; doesn't even wake up the monitor.

Thoughts?

IF the machine does not power up (ie no fans running) it sounds like a dead PRAM battery. Have you also previously upgraded the hard drive? If so is it an ATA-133 drive? If you have you must use an ATA-133 rated cable instead of the one that came with the computer, and make sure the ends are plugged in correctly (ie computer end in the computer and Master end into the Hard Drive with the slave slot empty.) This is a problem that cropped up on a number of us when we went to ATA-133 (could be 100) drives and SCSI CD-Roms - either you had to use an ATA-133 cable, have the original HD also connected on the second port, or an IDE CD Rom. Obviously if you have the original HD mounted, then this does not apply.
