We're poking around to see if we can narrow down the problem... the
delays posting on the web interface seem to be missing on a fresh test
account, so I suspect there's something bogging down in either inbox or
mail delivery, which'll scale up with number of followers and can be
very sensitive to delays since that all gets pushed during the save
operation. (OMB, Twitter, Facebook, XMPP etc delivery are done in
background queues so they don't bog the core down.)
