Is there a limit on chars it can contain?

Why not:
!gr...@site.com or
#...@site.com

Seems more natural but may be a tech limitation I'm not aware of.

Not yet; I think we've discussed the idea of having groups addressable 

with a 'group+' prefix, eg:



montr...@identi.ca -> http://identi.ca/montreal

group+montr...@identi.ca -> http://identi.ca/group/montreal



It should be possible to make tag subscription feeds similarly addressable:



tag+...@identi.ca -> http://identi.ca/tag/wtf
