Hi Ora,
your question reminds me of a technique used to emboss
metal which I watched in Egypt: cutting fine grooves and
gently hammering metal wire into it.
Doing it in stone might be possible by using a small
power tool with a small diamond wheel, or the edge of a
fine file for shorter lines. As I recall from Egypt, the
main thing to wach for is a constant depth and a slighly
angled profile of the groove - bottom wider than the
top. This might be difficult to achieve, and I think
drilling small holes into the bottom of the groove is a
good idea, as Rob suggested.
Perhaps you find in your neighbourhood a workshop doing
embossed metal trays and vessels - it is an old Arab
craft and perhaps they have some ideas?
