I have a couple of queries re the painting and gilding of lettering and
carved relief in slate and stone.
I have done much gilding of lettering in slate but can anyone advise a type
of paint (for external use) that :-
1) will weather well
2) will colour but not 'coat' the surface i.e I wish to retain as much as
possible of the immedieacy (?) of the carved finish .
As said, I've gilded slate but have recently tried to gild a small part of a
piece of relief carving in York (sandstone). I met with problems that were
not unforeseen but maybe someone has some tips for future reference. Unlike
slate, where you can rub down the final surface, York absorbs the size and
leaves a 'stain' around the gilded area. Is there a resist one can apply or
are there methods not yet exlored?
