You ask about paint for slate - I use Liquidtex acryllic - it is matt and if 
mixed with a little water will provide a wash and not conceal vibratto 
marks. It weathers pretty well.

Re York - best is to prime the cut letter with an oil based paint - 
preferably deep yellow in colour. if you are still uncertain do send me a 
message
